Burgundy, Cocoa and a Little Bit of Olive: Fall's Colors and How to Wear Them in a Scarf

Autumn fall color and scarf trends header with a blue bandana satin scarf

Every fall we get excited about the same thing: the colors. The leaves turn, the coats come out, and suddenly the deep, warm shades that felt too heavy in July feel just right. This season's fashion forecasts are leaning hard into those warm, rich tones, and scarves are having a big moment too. Here's what's trending for fall and winter, and how to bring it into what you already own with one easy scarf.

The Colors Everyone Is Talking About

Chocolate brown and cognac. Brown is being called the new black this season. Chocolate, cocoa, cognac and caramel are showing up as the easy base color for coats, knits and trousers. Brown feels warmer and softer than black, and it plays nicely with almost everything.

Burgundy and deep red. Burgundy, bordeaux and oxblood are the reds of the season. They're rich enough to feel special but calm enough to wear almost like a neutral. Brighter poppy red is still around too, mostly as a small pop of color, and a scarf is the perfect place for that.

Olive and earthy greens. Olive, khaki and moss green are the earthy supporting colors this fall. They look great next to brown and cream.

Cream as the light base. Soft cream and warm off-white keep all those deep shades from feeling too dark.

Navy and deep blue. Navy and deeper blues are popular accents, especially paired with brown or burgundy for a crisp contrast.

This Fall's Trend Colors

Beyond the classics, a few brighter shades are showing up everywhere this season:

  • Poppy red. A vivid, happy red, best worn in small flashes like a scarf. It looks sharp with black and white.
  • Burgundy. Still the classic. Pair it with cream, camel, chocolate, navy or gray.
  • Royal purple. Rich and a little unexpected for fall.
  • Cobalt blue. A bright, electric blue that wakes up neutrals.
  • Peachy melon. Soft, warm peach and melon tones that feel fresh next to brown.
  • Deep brown. Chocolate brown keeps growing as the go-to base color.

You'll find a scarf in each of these shades in our picks below.

The Scarf Trends to Try

Scarves aren't just for keeping your neck warm anymore. This fall they're the main event of an outfit. A few looks we keep seeing:

  • Tied at the hip or waist. A scarf knotted at the hip over wide trousers, a dress or a long coat changes the whole shape of an outfit.
  • Bandana-style at the neck. Folded into a triangle and tied close at the neck, worn with a blazer or a crisp shirt.
  • Skinny scarves. Thin, ribbon-like scarves are a sweet finishing touch, tied at the collar or in your hair.
  • Mixing prints. Polka dots with plaid is a fun pairing for fall. It sounds bold, but it works when the colors share a shade.
  • Triangle scarves. The little triangle scarf is back, tied forward at the neck or knotted low at the hip.
  • Loose and easy. Soft, fluid draping is in. Tight, bulky knots are out.

Scarves From Our Shop That Fit the Season

We looked through what we have on hand and picked the scarves that line up best with this fall's colors and trends.

Bordeaux Paisley Scarf. Deep burgundy and cream with classic paisley. This one is the season's favorite red in a pattern you'll wear for years. Try it with a camel or brown coat.

Violet Candy Stripe Satin Scarf. Bold diagonal stripes of lavender purple, butter yellow, hot pink, red-orange, navy and white, framed by a lavender-purple border. It's a cheerful way to try the season's purple without going all in. Knot it at the neck with denim or a white shirt.

Blue Bayou Bandana Satin Scarf. White bandana paisley on a rich royal blue ground. It brings in this fall's bold, bright blues with a classic print, and it's a smaller square that ties up neatly. Try it bandana-style at the neck with a white tee or a denim jacket.

Petal Pop Satin Scarf. Big watercolor-soft petals in hot pink, magenta, tangerine orange, cobalt blue and lilac on a white ground. It's the warm, bright side of this season's colors, and it wakes up an all-black outfit or a white tee.

Oat and Cocoa Plaid Blanket Scarf. A soft, brushed plaid in cream, oat and cocoa with chunky twisted fringe. It's the coziest way into deep brown, fall's go-to base color. Wrap it twice at the neck or loop it long over a camel coat.

Four Ways to Wear Your Fall Scarf

At the neck. Fold a square scarf into a triangle, roll it into a band and tie a small knot at the side or front. For the bandana look, leave the point in front and tie it close.

In your hair. Wrap a twilly or a rolled square scarf around a ponytail or a low bun, or tie it as a headband with the knot on top.

On your bag. Tie a twilly around your purse handle, or knot a square scarf to the strap. It adds a pop of fall color without changing your outfit.

Around the waist. Thread a long or rolled scarf through your belt loops and knot it at the side, or tie it at your hip over a dress or long cardigan. A triangle scarf knotted low on the hip is one of the easiest ways to try this season's trend.

A Simple Way to Start

You don't need a whole new fall wardrobe. Pick one scarf in a deep red, a warm brown or an earthy green, and wear it with the jeans, sweaters and coats you already love. Next time you get dressed, tie it on one new way and see how different your favorite outfit feels.

Vintage in spirit. Everyday in real life.
